Because he has realized that Aang will not kill him, and every time Aang redirects lightning it hurts him. It's Mary Sue storytelling, where the emotional and character-centric world-shaking decision is flipped on its head because "Oh look, the thing that no other Avatar can do".Ĭonsider instead, this. Aang learns about energybending out of an extremely convenient encounter, masters it with ease, and all of this happens at the eleventh hour.

You make some fair points, but the problem lies in speed. Of course with the understanding that sticking to one's guns is rarely easy, especially when it means putting it all on the line for what you believe in. while also being able to draw a line in the sand on our principles and what defines us as individuals. I think that's an important lesson in general, being able to recognize the duty we hold to our loved ones, our nation, our world, etc. Some might call it a stupid or even selfish move, but I think it was a great closure to the arc of Aang trying to find the balance between being the Avatar and being true to himself, which was a major recurring theme throughout the series.

IMO this was a great way to bring Aang's inner conflict full circle, basically saying 'Ok kid, you're clearly committed to this no killing thing, but how far are you REALLY willing to go to stand by that choice?' He could have taken the pragmatic way out and deleted Ozai right then and there, but instead he was willing to put his life (possibly even his soul) on the line to stay true to himself to the very end. It's not clear exactly what the consequences of losing would have been, but the Lion Turtle's line of 'you will be consumed' is enough to assume that it would not have been good.

Aang basically had to soul fight Ozai to make it happen, it was a battle of wills in a very literal sense. Because it wasn't just 'skedaddle skadoodle, your bending is now a noodle'. Yes it was a bit of a last minute addition (only sort of since the lion turtles had been referenced previously), but I don't think it was really the OP trump card people make it out to be. To those saying 'energybending was a copout':
